What is a Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement is a surgical procedure to resurface a damaged knee. This surgery is usually done for patients who have severe arthritis or a knee injury. A healthy knee has soft cartilages which cover the end of the thigh and shin bones which allows the bones to move smoothly without any friction against each other. With age the cartilage becomes thin which makes to bones rub against each other and become painful.

In this surgery, the ends of bones and remaining cartilages are removed and replaced with metal. A plastic material is placed in between the metal to allow smooth movement.

What are the types of surgery?

  • 1) Total Knee Replacement: The surgeon replaces the entire surface of the end of the thigh and shin bone that connects the knee.

  • 2) Partial Knee Replacement: If only one side of the knee is damaged, then partial surface of the bone is replaced.

  • 3) Complex Knee Revision & Replacement: This is done for patients with severe arthritis or has already undergone knee replacements.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How should you prepare before surgery?

Before surgery you will need to have a physical exam and preadmission testing and prepare you for your rehab after surgery. If you take blood thinners, or certain other types of medication, you'll need to stop taking them for a few days before you have your procedure.

How long does the surgery last?

The procedure usually takes approximately 1 hour. Preoperative preparation time is also required by an anesthesiologist to prepare you for the surgery and certain procedures after surgery will make you stay in the recovery room for about two-to two-and-half hour until you recover from anaesthesia.

How long will you have to stay in the hospital after surgery?

Typically, you will stay in the hospital one to three days after surgery, depending on how quickly you progress with physical therapy. Once you’re able to walk longer distances and are making consistent progress, you’ll be ready to go home.

How often you will see your surgeon after the procedure?

Your surgeon will follow your care throughout your hospital stay. It is likely that you’ll see your surgeon, physician assistant or nurse practitioner several times while in the hospital recovering. You will also have a follow-up appointment at the orthopedic clinic two to four weeks after surgery.

How long does it take to make a complete recovery?

Recovery is a gradual process. Walking and physical therapy exercises will help speed your recovery. Most patients are able to participate in most daily activities by 6 weeks.

By 3 to 6 months, most joint replacement patients regain the strength and endurance they had before surgery and are expected for full recovery.

When can I return to work?

Returning to work is highly dependent on the type of work you do, as well as your own recovery progress. If you have an office or desk job, you can expect to return after four to six weeks. With more physical jobs that require lifting, extensive walking or travel, you might need up to three months to fully recover.
